Women's Golf Recognized for Academic AchievementThe University of New Mexico women's golf team has been recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association for its academic achievement during the 2007-08 year. Head coach Jill Trujillo's Lobos compiled a 3.54 team GPA during the fall and spring semesters to rank No. 16 nationally. The Lobos are the only Mountain West Conference institution listed among the top-25. The University of South Alabama had the highest GPA at 3.734.7/13/2008
Backstedt Finishes 31st in Pro TournamentUniversity of New Mexico golfer Mikaela Backstedt finished in a tie for 31st place at the Felix Finnish Open, a professional event in Finland that is part of the SAS Masters Tour. Competing as an amateur, Backstedt had a final round 78 on the par-71 Aura Golf Course to finish at 16-over 229 (74-77-78). However, Backstedt had the fourth-lowest score among the 26 amateurs competing in the field of 83. Backstedt will be a senior at UNM in 2008-09.7/12/2008
England Finishes 4th in European Amateur Team Championship; Backstedt Playing in Finnish OpenEngland lost to Spain 6-1 today in the final round of the European Ladies' Amateur Team Championship at the Stenungsunds Golf Club in Sweden. England finished in fourth place. University of New Mexico golfer Jodi Ewart played against some familiar competition today. Ewart and teammate Rachel Jennings lost their foursome match to Belen Mozo and Maria Hernandez on the 19th hole. Mozo attends the University of Southern California and was a member of the Trojans' squad that won the 2008 NCAA Championship in Albuquerque in May. Hernandez competes for Purdue University. Hernandez edged Ewart in singles, 2 and 1.7/11/2008
Ewart Wins, But England Falls to Netherlands in European Championship SemisUniversity of New Mexico golfer Jodi Ewart did all she could to help her native country, but in the end it was the Netherlands upsetting No. 1 seed England 4-3 in the semifinals of the European Ladies' Amateur Team Championship at the Stenungsunds Golf Club (par 72, 6,125 yards) in Sweden. The Netherlands was the No. 4 seed. The match was all square before Marieke Nivard beat Rachel Jennings on the 19th hole to push the Dutch into Saturday's championship match against host Sweden.7/10/2008
Grantham Wins Albuquerque City Championship; Ewart Leads England into European Championship SemisIt was a good day for University of New Mexico women's golfers. Morgan Grantham shot a 1-over 73 in the final round to easily win the Albuquerque City Women's Amateur Golf Championship title by 19 shots at the Santa Ana Golf Club. Grantham finished with a 54-hole total of 224 (77-74-73). A few hours earlier and several thousand miles away, Jodi Ewart won her match as England advanced to the semifinals of the European Ladies' Amateur Team Championship at the Stenungsunds Golf Club (par 72, 6,125 yards) in Sweden. |
