From the Ski Trails with Fredrik Landstedt
October 16, 2007 It has been a while since the last update on the team. We have had a busy fall and it is definitely a little bit different around here without George Brooks. For those of you that do not know, George retired in June and is now the Executive Director for Ski New Mexico. This looks to be a tailor-made position for him where, in between his fishing trips, he can hang out with ski people around the state. The ski team has been training harder than ever this fall and we hope that it will show in the results this winter. I believe that we have a stronger team than last year, especially the men's Nordic team. This group is vastly improved and the three new Nordic guys, Simon Reissmann from Germany, and the two Norwegians, Tor-Hakon Hellebostad and Martin Kass, should all be top skiers this winter. The Nordic women were already a top team last winter and our top four competitors are all back. Polina Ermoshina, 5th place in 2007 NCAAs, started to practice with the cross-country running team a few weeks ago and immediately made the traveling team. She will race Mountain West Conference and the NCAA Regionals for the Lobos in early November. For Fall Break, we took a team trip to White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns. The weekly soccer game between the Alpine and Nordic teams was held on a parking lot in White Sands in 90 degree heat and ended in a 1-1 score. Now we are looking at two-three weeks of hard dry-land training before we get on snow. The plan is to ski during all weekends in November and then head up for training camps during Thanksgiving. Our first Nordic races will be in West Yellowstone, Mont. on Nov. 23-24, while the Alpiners will compete in Winter Park, Colo., Dec. 8-9. The collegiate season starts with races in Utah in Jan. 11-12, 2008.
