Dear UNM Ski Team Supporters,

As you all know, the legendary, one and only, UNM Ski Team Coach, George Brooks officially retired July 1st. I know that George will miss the interaction with the student/athletes and all of you, the ski team supporters, but most likely he will not miss the office work and recruiting hassles. George has promised to stay closely in touch with the ski team in the future and to help out as a Board member for our two fund raisers, the Golf Tournament and the Corporate Ski Cup.

I am excited to be the new head ski coach and I have hired George's assistant, Martin Kroisleitner, as the new Head Alpine Coach. Martin raced for the Austrian ski team in the World Cup and has showed to be a great coach. Although George's shoes are hard to fill, the future looks bright for the ski team. We are currently recruiting hard for next year and we should be competitive right at the top. Our goal is to bring another NCAA Championship trophy to UNM and to continue being the top performing team in the classroom. Last year we did not perform as well as we thought but looking back at it, there were definitely some brilliant performances.

  • Malin Hemmingsson winning the NCAA slalom title
  • Lars Loeseth being named the RMISA male alpine skier of the year and later winning the MWC male athlete of the year award as well as making the first team Academic All-American for ESPN the Magazine.
  • 11 - Academic All-Americans
  • 4 - NCAA Athletic All-Americans
  • Spring GPA of 3.73 - Men and 3.23 - Women.

The ski team is counting on your support for the future. Even though we are funded by the athletic department, your support makes it possible for us to be competitive with the best teams in the nation. I sincerely hope that you continue to cheer for the ski team and anything that you can do to support us is greatly appreciated. We have scheduled our Golf Tournament for Friday September 28th at the UNM Championship Golf Course. If you are planning on attending this event, please let us know as soon as possible so that we know how many additional teams we will have to find. Last year, we were only a few teams short of the maximum 36 and we expect to reach it this year.

On behalf of the UNM Ski Team, The University of New Mexico, and myself, thank you for your assistance and support.

    Sincerely,

    Fredrik Landstedt
    Head Coach UNM Ski Team
